NFL QB Competitions

The most important job in professional sports today is the position of starting quarterback. In many situations, a top-tier quarterback can take a mediocre team and turn them into a Super Bowl contender. Because of this, teams without a top tier quarterback will spend much of their offseason working on determining who their starting quarterback will be. This year, there are several teams that are still determining who their starting quarterback will be.

One team that seems to have a position that is up for grabs is the Jacksonville Jaguars ( Last season, the Jaguars were led by Blake Bortles. In his few years as the starting quarterback, Bortles looked sold and put up some big numbers. However, he also had troubles with interceptions and fumbles. This training camp he is competing heavily with veteran Chad Henne. During their preseason game, both players had a chance to play with the starting unit. Neither looked overly dominant and the team ended up only 8 points the whole game.

Another team that appears to have a quarterback duel on their hands are the Chicago Bears. For the past eight years, the Bears were led by quarterback Jay Cutler. Cutler was eventually let go by the team as they move in another direction. This offseason, the Bears signed Mike Glennon to an expensive deal and drafted Mitchell Trubisky number two overall in the draft. While Glennon was expected to be the starter all season, Trubisky had a great showing in the first game of his preseason career. Now, many fans and experts are calling for the Bears to push up the rookie’s progression and possibly have him start by week 1.

The third team that seems to have to make a quarterback decision in the near future are the Cleveland Browns. The Browns have not had a consistent solution at quarterback in decades. This offseason they made several moves in an attempt to find a new one. First, they traded for Brock Osweiler. Osweiler spent the prior year with the Houston Texans, but was considered a bust after signing a big contract. The Browns later drafted Deshon Kizer high in the draft. While most expect that Kizer will eventually be the starter, it appears that Osweiler will be given more of a chance than many would have thought. Osweiler has spent a lot of time with the first unit and has looked sharp in practices so far.

The last team that has some big decisions in the future are the New England Patriots. While the Patriots will again be led by Tom Brady, they will need to make a decision about backup Jimmy Garropolo in the future. Garropolo is widely considered the top backup in the league and will be a highly priced free agent when the time comes. The Patriots are now faced with the decision of moving on to Garropolo, or committing to Brady in the future, even though he is already 40 years old, but wants to play several more years.
