If you are a cinema fan nowadays then you had better get used to seeing larger than life blockbuster super hero films in your local theater. The Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU for short, is in full swing now with the upcoming releases of ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ as well as the penultimate ‘Infinity War’ film. While Marvel is definitely heating up with their big name characters taking center stage fans are excited to see that one underrated character, the Hulk played by Mark Ruffalo, is finally getting his chance to shine. Ruffalo opened up about the soon-to-be-released ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ before going on to discuss a ‘Hulk’ trilogy and what it will entail.
There have been a variety of ‘Hulk’ movies over the years. There have even been multiple solo-Hulk films in recent memory played by two different actors. Most recent was the ‘Incredible Hulk’ which was part of Phase 1 of the MCU and starred Ed Norton as the Hulk. Ruffalo said in his interview that this film was the first phase of Hulk’s growth and now ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ is kicking off the second phase of his character’s evolution. Among all of the greater things going on in the MCU it is riveting that the Hulk is being allowed to grow out of his ‘Hulk Smash’ role.
Mark Ruffalo spoke in an interview to Cinema Blend extensively about his relationship with Kevin Feige, the head runner for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ruffalo said that Feige had pulled him aside in order to find out what he would want out of a standalone film. Ruffalo, not actually revealing his response, went on to tell Feige of a trio of ideas that he had. Feige would say, “I love that. Why do we do that in the next three movies, starting with Thor 3 and then we go into Avengers 3 and 4.”
Ruffalo is using ‘trilogy’ in a different sense of the word. He won’t be getting more standalone movies, at least not in the near future, but his character arc will be taking on a central role in the films. Ruffalo went on to explain that Bruce Banner’s journey with the Hulk has been one of constant growth and evolution and that ‘Ragnarok’ will be the great split. Ruffalo said, “We all got to reinvent our characters in this [‘Ragnarok’]”. Now rumors are abound that the Hulk might get a standalone film in Phase 4. We shall wait and see.
