How Jason Hope Is Fighting For Anti-aging Research
Jason Hope donated $500,000 to the SENS Research Foundation in 2010. With this generous contribution and the donations of others, the organization was able to construct a laboratory called the Cambridge SENS Laboratory. Additionally, the organization used some of its donations to start a new research program. In an interview, Jason Hope said that he was pleased to donate to the SENS Research Foundation because of its innovative initiatives that fight aging. He said that the organization focuses on finding cures for degenerative diseases that destroy the body and cause people to age faster than necessary. To illustrate his point, he referenced Alzheimer’s disease and lung disease. Jason Hope said that such diseases affect more than the mind or the lungs and lead to a premature breakdown of the human body.
The SENS Research Foundation has a development program called AGE-breaker. For a drug or treatment to fit the AGE-breaker standards, it must be able to break down advanced glycation end products or AGEs. An AGE is a type of metabolic waste that builds up in the body and causes harm that leads to degenerative processes. For example, when people get older, they lose the elasticity in their blood vessels and skin. AGEs are tied to age-related diseases such as arthritis, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. These ailments are called age-related diseases since people develop them from bodily breakdowns that happen as they get older. Jason Hope said that there is too little research being conducted to develop effective treatments. However, he feels that the benefits of breakthroughs for such diseases are worth the investment and hopes to inspire others to donate.
For the past two decades, most of the research about AGEs and AGE-breaking treatments has yielded disappointing results. The reason for this is partly because experiments were done only with lab animals. Researchers initially thought that they found promising leads. However, they realized that the results in long-living humans were much different than those in short-living animals. When it seemed that an animal-based study was promising, multiple differences in genetic makeup between animals and humans left them with nothing of value to show.
Today, researchers understand the complex differences between humans and animals when it comes to aging processes. Although there are multiple types of AGEs in animal tissues, researchers only found one type in human tissues. The human AGE is called glucosepane. Since this protein has been identified, researchers have a much clearer direction for their research efforts. This means that philanthropists such as Jason Hope may have the opportunity to help some of the most useful discoveries in medical history happen. Degenerative diseases such as cancer, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s are costing Americans billions of dollars every year.
If researchers can discover treatments for removing the AGEs that are present when degenerative diseases develop, they can preserve mobility and improve overall health for millions of people. Also, these research efforts could have major implications for dermatology since AGEs are tied to people losing collagen and skin elasticity. Rejuvenation research is not widely reported on mainstream news, and Jason Hope is optimistic about that changing when people realize the potential of AGE-breaking research and the discovery of glucosepane being tied to so many degenerative processes.
