Tis the Holiday Season and Star Wars is the gift that keeps on giving. Ever since Disney rocked the entertainment world by acquiring the rights to Star Wars it seems like not a month can go by without another film being announced. We saw the announcement for an Obi-Wan solo film, we’ve already seen the Han Solo film go into production, and now everyone’s favorite bounty hunter might be getting his own feature film. The Boba Fett standalone project is looking increasingly likely that it will be greenlit and there is a nerd deep down inside of us that couldn’t be happier.
When Disney released ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ they essentially opened up the floodgates to anthology styled films that focused on expanding the universe more than one central storyline. Of course, ‘Rogue One’ was immediately followed up by announcements of the Han Solo and Obi-Wan films and now it seems like we’ve wrapped all the way back around to gain steam for Boba Fett getting his own film.
Boba Fett getting his own solo project has been in the cards forever, even dating back to when Lucas was still completely in charge of the universe. There was a time when Simon Kinberg was partnered up with Josh Trank (Fantastic Four) to work on a Boba Fett anthology film. The two creatives came to a clashing viewpoint in the process and the project was famously stalled. Now, Kinberg seems to be back in the fold as the alleged director of the new Boba Fett movie. Of course, this is complete speculation but Lucasfilm has a film with the working title ‘Tin Can’ which seems like it can only be in reference to Boba Fett. Of course, having Kinberg attached to that project is yet another nod toward the likelihood of this being the case.
If Boba Fett is truly getting his own spinoff film, we can only hope that Kinberg is up to the task and ready to completely focus on the project. Kinberg is currently working on the highly anticipated ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ and Disney has yet to add Boba Fett back to their ‘official slate’ of upcoming films. However, everything seems like it should be trending in the right direction to see Boba Fett on the big screen once again. His story can’t have ended in the Sarlacc Pit, right? For now, we have only to hold our breath and wait.
