The newest Marvel venture, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, is set to completely reset the table for the comic book world. Fans of the Marvel comic book storyline will know just how important Thanos and his war with the Avengers is. In fact, the war is universe-shattering. In the cinematic realm, this means that the team at Marvel will need to really push their work to the next level in order to render the same kind of stakes so that fans will feel every bit of action. This can’t be another round of cartoony action, interspersed with quirky one-liners. This film has to hit hard or else all of the Marvel Phases has been for nothing. Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors behind ‘Infinity War’, took some time to answer questions and their thoughts seem to echo ours and that should make fans everywhere ecstatic.
The Russo Brothers, who had previously directed ‘Captain America: Winter Soldier’, took questions while at Sina Weibo. Joe Russo made sure to take time to stress just how important several key thematic elements were – love, loss, pain, and sacrifice. Joe Russo says, “And for us, the best stories have stakes. Characters have to make sacrifices.” Russo would go on to belabor the point, “To really, really feel the true emotion and the hero’s journey they have to go through trials and those trials could cost them something.”
While nobody expects any entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be as dark as their DC counterparts, if there ever was a time to get mired in the macabre side of the comic books then the time would be now. Thanos played to excellence by Josh Brolin, is a complete wildcard in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Marvel has traditionally gotten away with charismatic, one-offs for their villains, that just won’t be the case for Thanos. Thanos is supposed to be end-game level content, to put it in terms that gamers would understand.
At the center of the ‘Infinity War’ story is the battle for all of existence. The Infinity Gauntlet, once assembled, will give the wearer power over all things. Literally. Thanos, the Mad Titan, has ripped through all of existence and he has ended up on Earth with the Avengers in his sights. For fans that were upset by the lack of consequence in ‘Civil War’, the action in ‘Infinity War’ should more than make up for their concerns.
