Born on September 3, 1999, in Jakarta, Rich has Chinese heritage. He is the youngest of four siblings. His Chinese descent is present in his songs and videos. Raised in West Jakarta in a low-class neighborhood, Rich never had a formal education. He spent his childhood helping in his parent’s café.
At 11 years old in 2010, Brian started his media career. He opened a social media account. Rich started by getting his hands on Rubik’s Cube. He then realized he can log onto his parents’ computer and find strategies to solve it faster. And that is how he discovered YouTube, Twitter, and other social media platforms.
Rich began his career by posting dark-comedy sketches and videos on Twitter. He quickly moved to the Vine platform for video content. He posted daily videos there from his 15th birthday onward. In the beginning, Brian spoke only Indonesian. That was a huge limit for his audience. But he learned to speak English by watching YouTube videos and by listening to rappers like 2 Chainz and Tyler the Creator.
He began listening to hip hop music in 2012. An American friend introduced him to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Thrift Shop. Brian explored the genre deeply, discovering artists like Drake, Kanye West, 2 Chainz, and more.
In 2014, Brian recorded his first rap song on an iPhone microphone over an MF Doom produced instrumental. In the beginning, he wanted to be a cinematographer in Los Angeles. But after his music career took off, he gave up on cinematography.
In the beginning, Rich used the moniker Rich Chigga. He released his debut single Living the Dream under that name on July 17, 2015. Produced by DJ Smokey, the song got an average success. So far, the video on YouTube amassed more than 139 million views. The song peaked at Number 4 on the Bubbling Under R&B and Hip Hop Singles.
