Career Ups and Downs
Born in Kosice, Slovakia, Dobrik moved to Vernon Hills, Illinois as a child. His family moved to America when he was 6 years old. There, he attended Vernon Hills High School. As a young kid, David played tennis. He even qualified for the 2014 Boys Tennis State Tournament. He won third place in doubles.
After graduation, his parents presented him with a simple choice. Either go to college or move out. David chose the latter and moved to Los Angeles in 2013 with some friends. In the beginning, the group struggled to survive on cheap groceries.
And at that time, he found out about Vine. The application served as a platform for users to create and post six-second looping videos and share with others. In the beginning, Dobrik ran different sports accounts and posted sports highlights. He made between $1,500 and $2,000 per month.
But he wanted more and dreamt of bigger things. Dobrik transitioned to comedic Vine videos and teamed up with other funny people on Vine. The group earned the name the Vlog Squad. Other members include Zane Hijazi, Gabbie Hanna, Josh Peck, Toddy Smith, and Scotty Sire.
In 2015, Dobrik followed some of the creators of Vine to YouTube. In the beginning, he couldn’t afford elaborate productions and rent out massive sets. So, he and Liza Koshy started vlogging. A vlog is basically an online video journal. David loved that he can record his whole day with a small camera. He did it for his own enjoyment.
When he moved to YouTube, Dobrik entered the group Second Class. By the end of the channel in 2015, they got close to 20,000 subscribers.

His high energy videos like pranks, cute animals, inside jokes, and similar, helped him gain a huge YouTube following. He often collaborates with YouTube and Vine stars, as well as real celebrities. A few years ago, he posted three days a week. Now, he posts two days a week.
Dobrik also has a podcast Views with Jason Nash, a fellow YouTube celebrity. He started it in September 2018. In the beginning, he posted the podcasts on YouTube, but then made the move to Apple Podcasts and Spotify. He uploaded the last podcast on June 2, 2019.

In November 2019, he beat Harry Styles and Shawn Mendes for People magazine’s Sexiest Heartthrob of 2019. The same year, YouTube named him the fifth most-viewed creator for December with 2.4 billion views.
Dobrik used his popularity and fame to try other ventures as well. In January 2020 he launched a mobile camera application. Called David’s Disposable, it lets users create retro-looking photos of their own. So far, the app amassed one million downloads. Apple put it on the Apps We Love Right Now list.
In April 2020, he got named as the Number 1 influencer again.
