Born Richard Colson Baker in April 1990, he is known professionally as Machine Gun Kelly or MGK. He is an American musician, rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor. MGK is famous for his genre duality, switching and combining alternative rock and hip hop.
Between 2007 and 2010, he released four mixtapes, launching his career into the spotlight. In 2012, he released his debut studio album titled Lace Up, peaking at Number 4 on the US Billboard 200 Chart. This album contained his breakout single, Wild Boy, featuring Waka Flocka Fame.
But we are getting ahead of ourselves. Born in April 1990 in Houston, he and his family moved around the world. Fun fact: they lived in Egypt for the first 4 years of his life. The reason for all that moving is his parents were Christian missionaries.
Besides Egypt, they also lived in Germany, and then Chicago, Denver, and Cleveland in the United States. His mother left the home when he was nine years old. At that point, his father moved to Denver to live with his aunt. It was a tough childhood. Baker’s father fought depression and unemployment, all of which had a toll on the young boy.
In sixth grade, Richard Colson Baker began listening to rap while attending Hamilton Middle School. Then, he lived in Cleveland and attended Shaker Heights High School.
As a young child, he was inspired by Ludacris, Eminem, and DMX. After listening to the We Right Here track from the album The Great Depression by DMX, he was hooked on rap.
His career began in a unique way. He was the first rapper to win at the Apollo Theater. He was then featured on MTV2’s Sucker Free Freestyle.
In May 2010, he made his national debut with the single Alice in Wonderland, released on iTunes and accompanied by a music video.
It wasn’t until 2012 that he released his debut album, Lace Up. Wild Boy was the lead single for the album, with the song peaking at Number 98 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The song Invincible gave him even more recognition. It was the second single of the album, and it was elected as the official theme song of WrestleMania XXVII. WWE used the song to highlight John Cena in his match. Machine Gun Kelly even performed during the event.
The album had guest appearances from Cassie, DMX, Easter Dean, Lil John, Waka Flocka Fame, Young Jeezy, and more. It debuted at Number 4 on the US Billboard 200 Chart.
Thanks to his successful music career, Colson Baker was able to venture into other industries. He had his film debut in 2014 in the romantic drama Beyond the Lights. In the movie, he played a shallow and self-important rapper named Kid Culprit. Then, in 2016, he co-starred in the drama film The Land, produced by fellow rapper Nas.
In the Netflix horror thriller Bird Box in 2018, he appeared alongside Sandra Bullock. He then played drummer Tommy Lee in The Dirt, a 2019 Netflix movie about Motley Crue.
