One of them turned out to be an ex-CIA agent who did security work for the Republicans. In their stories, Bernstein and Woodward connected the burglars to a massive slush fund and a corrupt attorney general.
Bernstein suspected that President Nixon was involved, and he found a laundered check that linked Nixon to the burglary. Their discoveries led to further investigation into the Nixon administration and the president. President Richard Nixon later resigned to avoid facing impeachment.
Two years later, in 1974, after the Watergate burglary and two months, before Nixon resigned, Carl and Bob released the book All the President’s Men. It contained articles and notes about the scandal that they wrote for Post.
In 1975, the book was turned into a movie starring Dustin Hoffman as Bernstein and Robert Redford as Woodward. The movie would go on to earn several Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominations.
In 1977, Bernstein left the Post and expanded into other areas. He joined broadcast news during a high growth period and worked at ABC, CNN, and CBS as a political commentator. Bernstein also began investigating the secret cooperation between the CIA and American media during the Cold War.
