He was born in Wateren, Drenthe, in the Netherlands. He grew up on a dairy farm his family operated. In 1970, Dr. Pol graduated with a degree in veterinary medicine from Utrecht University. He and his wife Diane then moved to Harbor Beach, Michigan, where he worked for another veterinarian practice. The two met in 1961 when she was a foreign exchange student at Mayville High School.
In 1981, Pol and his wife Diane Dalrymple began their own practice in their home. Their practice was made up of a mix of large and small animals. They moved to Weidman, Michigan, a rural area where there is a lack of emergency animal care hospitals.
