Who Is Her Celebrity Father?
Born Santos Saul Alvarez Barragan in July 1990, he is a Mexican professional boxer. Canelo Alvarez has won multiple world championships in four weight classes from light middleweight to light heavyweight, including unified titles in three of those classes.
Canelo is the only boxer in history to become the undisputed champion at super middleweight, having held the WBA(Super), WBC, and Ring magazine titles since 2020, and the IBF and WBO titles since 2021.
Famous as an excellent counterpuncher, Santos is able to exploit openings in his opponents’ guards while avoiding punches with head and body movements. In one interview, speaking about his ancestry, Saul said, “There might have been an Irish grandfather somewhere back in my past”. In his childhood, he was bullied and called Jicama con Chile, which translates to jicama with chili flakes, which is a popular snack in Mexico.
Speaking about his career, he began as an amateur boxer at 13 years of age. He began after watching his older brother Rigoberto debut as a professional boxer. As an amateur, in 2004, Saul won the silver medal at the Junior Mexican National Championship in Sinaloa. His amateur record was 44-2 with 12 knockouts.
At the age of 15, after his championship at the Junior Nationals, he turned professional. His trainers at the time, father-and-son team Chepo and Eddy Reynoso, were unable to find suitable junior opponents. So, they made him a pro.
In the first 19 months, he knocked out 11 of his 13 documented opponents, all of whom were significantly older. Fun fact: his older brother says that Saul fought ten more times in that span, winning all ten by knockout. Sadly, these fights in small venues were poorly documented.
In total, as a professional, he has fought 62 fights. His record is 58 wins, 39 of which with a knockout, and 2 losses. He also has 2 draws.
Fun fact: he is one of the rare boxers who have fought in four different types of weight divisions. Canelo began his career at welterweight and eventually moved up to middleweight.
