Mike quickly rose up in the ranks of boxing. As an amateur, he won gold medals at the 1981 and 1982 Junior Olympic Games, beating Joe Cortez and Kelton Brown.

Then, he engaged in a series of comeback fights, regaining the WBA and WBC titles in 1996. He joined Floyd Patterson, Tim Witherspoon, George Foreman, Evander Holyfield, and Muhammad Ali as the only men in boxing history to have regained a heavyweight championship after losing it.
