Born in December 1962 at Provident Hospital in Chicago, she has four other siblings. Her mother worked as a teacher, and her father is a US Air Force veteran. For her high school education, she attended and graduated from Lindblom Technical High School in 1980.
She then graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, receiving a BS in psychology and biology. Fun fact: Cheryl is a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. In 2007, she got inducted into the school’s hall of fame, as the first alumnus.
Raised in a religious family, she remains a staunch Christian. During her young years, she had talent in athletics, and not in class. And she even took part in sports like running and high jump for the school team.
