Do you want to know more about the life and career of Julia? Do you want to know how much money did she earn for her appearance in Seinfeld? Read on.

Quick Bio

Born in January 1961 to an American mother and a French father. Do you know her father? She is the daughter of billionaire Gerard Louis-Dreyfus. He chaired the Louis Dreyfus Company.

And her grandfather, Pierre, came from a Jewish family from Alsace. He served as a cavalry officer and took part in the French Resistance during World War II. Her great-great-grandfather, Leopold Louis-Dreyfus, founded the Louis Dreyfus Group, a French commodities and shipping conglomerate in 1851.

In 1962, just one year after her birth, her parents got a divorce. She relocated to Washington with her mother at the age of four. Her mother remarried to L. Thompson Bowles, a dean of the George Washington University Medical School.

She spent her childhood in different states and countries and took part in her stepfather’s work with Project HOPE. As part of it, she also visited Colombia and Tunisia.

Julia graduated from Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland, and then attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She studied theatre art and performed in the Mee-Ow Show.

As part of her comedic training, she took part in The Second City, a famous Chicago improvisational theatre group. Her performance with The Practical Theatre Company at the Golden 50th Anniversary Jubilee got her an invitation to join the cast of Saturday Night Live.

Julia was only 21 when she joined SNL, the youngest female cast member in the history of the program at the time. She stayed with SNL until 1985, appearing alongside actors like Eddie Murphy, Billy Crystal, Martin Short, and many more.

During her third and final year on SNL, she met Larry David, a writer who would go on to create Seinfeld. Following her departure from SNL in 1985, she appeared in movies like Hannah and Her Sisters, Soul Man, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and a few more.

And then Larry David cast her as Elaine Benes on Seinfeld. She played the role for nine seasons, appearing in all but three episodes. Fun fact: She did not appear in the pilot episode. Initially, her character did not take a part in the series. But after the first episode, NBC executives criticized the show as male-centric. So, Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld added a woman to the cast.

The show ended in 1998, with the finale amassing 76 million viewers. To this date, it remains one of the most-watched TV events in history.

Following the end of Seinfeld, Julia had a successful run as a voice actress. She voiced a character in A Bug’s Life and then voiced a character in The Simpsons.

She also starred in the new single-camera sitcom, Watching Ellie. The show lasted for two seasons, with viewership declining rapidly in the second season.

The end of Watching Ellie sparked the theory of the Seinfeld Curse. None of the former Seinfeld actors would ever achieve success again in the television industry, not even Jerry Seinfeld.

She then appeared in Arrested Development from 2004 to 2005. In early 2011, HBO cast Louis-Dreyfus as the lead role in the new satirical comedy series Veep. She also worked as a producer of the series.

During her career, Julia has received eleven Emmy Awards, three for producing and eight for acting. She also received nine Screen Actors Guild Awards, five American Comedy Awards, two Critics’ Choice Television Awards, a Golden Globe, and many other accolades.

Net Worth

So this is the question we all want to know the answer to. How much is Julia Louis-Dreyfus capital? How much did she earn as part of Seinfeld?

The television sitcom remains her most successful role. In the early seasons, she and other supporting cast members got $150,000 per episode. But before the later seasons, Julia, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards asked for a raise. They initially asked for royalties and syndication rights. But the producers refused it, so they asked for a big raise.

Julia and other cast members asked for $1 million per episode paycheck. After a while, they settled at $600,000 per episode.

As of January 2021, her wealth is more than $250 million. And while she earned about $50 million from the show (counter for inflation), that is far behind Jerry Seinfeld and his $400 million. Jerry and Larry David are the only ones who earn money from reruns and royalties.

At some point in her life, she will have a fortune of more than $1 billion. That is when she gets an inheritance from her father’s estate. But she will have to split the money with several siblings and a stepmother. And she might give Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David a run for their money.
