You might think a name like Kiril Zelensky is not much known in the United States. But thanks to the War in Ukraine, the son of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gets into the media spotlight. Kiril turned 10 years old this January and is yet to become a teenager.

Who Is His Father?
Born Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy, he is the President of Ukraine and a former comedian and actor. He serves as the sixth and current President of Ukraine, coming to the position in 2019.
Volodymyr was born to a Ukrainian Jewish family and grew up as a native Russian speaker in Kryvyi Rih, a city in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in Central Ukraine. Before his acting career, President Volodymyr Zelensky obtained a degree in law from the Kyiv National Economic University.
But he pursued a career in comedy and created a production company titled Kvartal 95. This company produced movies, cartoons, and television series. Volodymyr was born into an academic family. His father, Oleksandr Zelenskyy, works as a professor and computer scientist. He is now the head of the Department of Cybernetics and Computing Hardware at the Kryvyi Rih State University. And his mother, Rymma Zelenska works as an engineer.
Volodymyr has appeared in several movies. At the age of 16, he obtained a certification for English as a second language. That allowed him to appear in movies like Love in the Big City, Office Romance Our Time, and more. He played the lead role in the 2012 movie 8 First Dates and sequels produced in 2015 and 2016.
Volodymyr also recorded the voice of Paddington Bear in the Ukrainian dubbing of Paddington. In March 2018, members of his production company Kvartal 95 registered the political party Servant of the People. In the beginning, Zelensky denied any plans to enter politics. He claimed he registered the name only to prevent it from being used by others.
But it was obvious he was planning to run for president. His presidential campaign against Petro Poroshenko was entirely virtual. Zelensky did not release a detailed policy platform. Instead, the Ukrainian politician reached out to the electorate using social media platforms like YouTube. Instead of campaign rallies, he conducted stand-up comedy routines across the country.
During his campaign, he promised to end Ukraine’s protracted conflict with Russia. He attempted to engage in dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin numerous times. But in 2021, the tensions culminated in the launch of an ongoing Russian invasion.
Throughout the conflict, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is trying to calm the Ukrainian official population and assure the international community they are not trying to retaliate.
He has since declared martial laws across Ukraine and a general mobilization of armed forces. For his leadership during the crisis, Time Magazine named him Time Person Of The Year for 2022.

The Love Story Of His Parents
During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Volodymyr and his wife have become popular figures in the Western World. Vogue even did an interview with the First Lady. And there, she talked about their love story.
She met Volodymyr at Kryvyi Rih National University where she studied architecture. They got married in 2003 after eight years of a romantic relationship.
The family has not been reunited since the beginning of the Russian attack in February 2022. Zelenska and their children went into hiding, while the Ukrainian president has seen them for a total of two days.
Olena is fiercely private, and she doesn’t share much about her family. According to some reports, she opposed her husband’s plans to join politics. The simple reason was that she did not enjoy the limelight.
In the interview, she said, “I prefer staying backstage. My husband is always on the forefront, while I feel more comfortable in the shade”.
Is He On Social Media?
Kiril is 10 years old as of January 2023. That would make him illegible for a profile on Instagram, where the platform sets a 12-year-age limit.
His mother, however, is quite active. She uses social media to encourage Ukrainians to remain resilient. The First Lady of Ukraine has more than 2.3 million followers on Instagram.
In one video, she wrote, “We are against the war and did not attack first. But we are not going to give up. The whole world, look, we are fighting for peace in your countries as well”.
Helping His Father
In one Daily Mail interview, Olena said that her husband Volodymyr sometimes gets military advice from his young son Kiril Zelensky. She said he is one of the “war advisors”. She said, “My son is a growing political scientist. He knows everything, he gives us military advice, what we should buy”.
But the statement was taken out of context. What Olena actually said was, “She always tried to speak honestly with her children about the war. With my eldest daughter, it is easier, she is already an adult. She reads everything, sees everything, and knows what victories we have to achieve to end the war. It is different with my son, he is a growing up politologist, he knows everything, and he gives us advice”.
It would be wrong to interpret it as the president getting advice from his 10-year-old son, who was 9 years old at the time.
