We said Ryan is Pete’s son, but let’s talk about the great American tennis player for a bit. Born Petros Pete Sampras in August 1971, he is an American former professional tennis player and former World No. 1 ranked player. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players, he held the record for most Grand Slam titles for a while.
Pete has won 14 Grand Slam titles in total, 2 Australian Open titles, 5 US Open titles, and 7 Wimbledon titles. He won Wimbledon three straight times, in 1993, 1994, and 1995. He never got past the semi-finals at the French Open. Federer, the player who succeeded him as the greatest for one point, managed to win the French Open, a title that eluded Sampras in his career.
When he retired, Petros Sampras had the record for most Wimbledon titles, a record Federer also eclipsed with eight titles. When Pete retired with 14 titles, nobody believed someone can pass him. Now, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer have each won 20+ Grand Slam titles.
Pete was born in Washington, as the third child of Soterios Sammy Sampras and Georgia Sampras. His father Soterios Sampras was born in the US to a Greek family, and his mother Georgia emigrated from Sparta, Greece. He has Polish and Greek heritage.
Pete began his career at the young age of 3. No, that was not a professional career, but it was the first time he played with a tennis racket. He found one in the basement of his home and spent hours hitting balls against the wall.
